Originating in 2021, Running 72 was started in response to the 2020 statistic that showed 72% of deaths by suicide in Aoteroa/New Zealand were men. This disparity is now suspected to have risen to 77%.

Running 72 responds to this statistic by holding a relay for life in the centre of the UC campus for 72 hours non-stop. Time and time again UC students have come together to support our mission, changing the student wellbeing culture together – but nothing quite like this. We too are sick and tired of seeing our mates suffer, feeling hopeless, giving up on themselves…

Today we choose change. Through running along our 2km route through the University Campus you’re a change creator, raising funds for our student-led initiatives and helping to provide a safe space here at UC for your mates.

Last year, you legends ran 6454 laps, a total of 11,617km, and raised over $15,000 for the Lads Without Labels charity.

This time, 9028 laps, 15889km, $11,310 raised, 1 incredible community

At 4pm on Friday, the legends in our community ran the final lap of Running 72, completely smashing last years record of 6454 laps and bringing us to a total of 9028 laps - 15,889km!!!

From our team at Lads, we cant even begin to express how thankful we are to everyone for showing up and supporting us in our endeavours to change the conversation around mental health. Every single one of you is why change is possible.

Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi.
